4/50 of my state birds on state maps printmaking project…

(Please do not delete the source)

Maryland, Maeve Rose Art 2014

The great state of Maryland is represented by Baltimore Orioles and the state tree, White Oak… This one took me about 8 hours to complete, carefully layering structure, colors, and values of the birds then the branches and leaves via monotype printmaking. I embellish with details on the birds, focusing mainly on the eyes and wings to capture the personality of each.

Basically, I sat in my basement home studio all day listening to Arctic Monkeys, getting ink on my pajamas and knocking the cat off the table.

Akua Monotype ink gives me flexibility with blending colors, a bold palette choice and when painted thinly, I can control the amount the ink spreads under the plexiglass plate. The paper is a little hydrophobic so the ink sits on top, and tends to spread easily if I don’t let it dry a bit between layers. It’s fun to experiment with how different types of paper react to liquid pigment!

The maps are from a 1952 Ran McNally Premier Atlas I swiped from a box my mom was going to give to goodwill a few years ago, intending to do some sort of collage with it. When I picked up printmaking when I got to college, I eventually ran out of ideas as painting birds and flowers in my sketchbook was getting full. It needed to be translated to something with more meaning, so I started printing in some of my handmade books (I’ll post about those later) and now I’m onto maps!

Looking forward to when I have another eight hours free to work on the next state… Maybe Colorado?
